nautilus trash permissions

Nautilus allows me to drag a folder containing read only files from a
vfat partition to the trash/wastebasket, but it then doesn't allow me to
empty it.  I can sudo rm -fr ... to clear the relevant .Trash folder but
I feel that's an awfully powerful sledgehammer to crack a relatively
small nut.  I wonder has this issue been fixed?
