Installation report for Acer TravelMate 8100

Have any of you tried to plug in an mount a usb thumb drive.  It will
not work for me.  I get a bunch of messages:  "usb 5-7: hald timeout
out on ep0in".  I also get the following messages scrolling in
/var/log/messages:
uba: device 3 capacity nsec 0 bsize 512
uba: cmd #284 cmd status (-104)
uba: cmd #285 cmd status (-104)

This is a thumb drive that I have used many times under linux before,
so I don't think it has anything to do with that.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
