alsaconf? (Setting sound up a Thinkpad600E)

I can't help you, but I can confirm that I'm having the same problem on
a Thinkpad 600E running Hoary.

I installed Warty and immediately dist-upgraded to Hoary.

Having encountered this sound problem previously, I knew that it could
be solved by getting cs4232 modprobed with options

Code:
--------------------
    io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0
--------------------

So I tried this AND IT WORKED.

Once.

Now it doesn't, and I have no idea why not. And I'm banging my head
against issues I don't wish to become an expert in... So a few
questions I have (unless somebody has a magic fix, in which case forget
the questions and tell me):
1. Why, as mentioned above, is module snd-cs36xx inserted rather than
cs4232 which everybobdy *knows* is the right one?
2. Where, o where, is alsaconf in hoary? All the posts I see about
this problem suggest using it and I feel cheated!
3. What buttons must I push/conf files must I edit in order to get
cs4232 insmod'ed instead of snd-cs36xx? I've tried editing
/etc/modules, /etc/modutils/alsa-base and a few others, and they make
NO difference at all.
4. What options should grub pass to the kernel? I've got

Code:
--------------------
    acpi=off apm=on
--------------------

(apart from the usual quiet splash ro) but I believe I need something
about isapnp, or perhaps pci=noacpi?

I have previously tried someone's suggestion of installing polypaudio
and also installing a bunch of esd-related goodies. No dice.

Please, please, someone help us!

Robert.

PS - When I try run amixer (as root) I get something about

Code:
--------------------
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
--------------------

cat /proc/asound/cards gives me

Code:
--------------------
     --- No soundcards ---
--------------------

and /proc/asound/devices only has "33: Timer" or something like that.
I also can't get the modem to work, despite having it working under
Warty last week, but that is probably an issue for another post.
