GDM screen resolution setting?

Preferences->Screen Resolution sets the resolution for an X session,
and can be configured as a default resolution, (which works fine.)

Unfortunately, GDM still gives an hourglass shape for the screen as
Gnome attempts to fry my monitor's H-Sync circuitry.

Where is the GDM screen resolution?
