Sound Juicer: slow?

This is my first day on Ubuntu (from mandrakelinux 10.1, which, a couple 
of months ago, replaced windows xp for me), and it has been very nice.

Right now, I'm ripping a cd with Sound Juicer, to the .ogg format. Speed 
is only 1.3x How come? Is it because Sound Juicer is a new program? Or 
because making .ogg files is more difficult than .mp3's? Or is my cd 
drive not fully recognized?

This is not a big problem for me, but I'm curious whether other people 
experience the same thing.
