Printer install stopped dead by "New Printer" dialogue relentlessy crashing

I have attempted to do the same. However, CUPS seems to have a lot of
different packages, and I could not determine for sure which is the
main, or at least the most relevant, ones.

Do you remember exactly which packages you removed? CUPS server, or CUPS
client? Both? Others?
