SOLVED--Re: Earthlink DSL failing to see Ubuntu

I have now had joy in the realm of DSL connectivity.  I fo0und the
package,  rp-pppoe-3.6 which includes a READ ME that guides you through
the configuration which is simplicity itself.  After that you just issue
<sudo ppoe-astart>
and DSL cooks!

Thanks to everyone who helped me get to this stage and I hope someone
else may benefit from this experience.
