LT Modems

You can call me a masochist, or you can simply call me a cheap bastard. I
cannot afford an external modem and have to make do with what I have. And
what I have is an LT Winmodem that will often times work with Linux if the
drivers are compiled properly. Hoary had drivers in the restricted modules,
breezy does not. Until the Ubuntu team compiles them and puts them in
restricted, I have to rely upon other people with the same hardware as I
have that know much more about compiling than I do. Simply "get an external
modem" does not help me in the slightest, especially as I know there are now
external winmodems out there.

If it requires a driver it isn't a modem it's a modified soundcard
sometimes
called a winmodem. It's not worth the hassle buy an decent external one and
you will save yourself a lot of pain and hassles.
