It's quite hard to diagnose a problem if you don't provide:
1. version of Ubuntu you're trying to install (5.10, given the Subject ;-)
2. source of Ubuntu (d/l, pressed CD, other)

<most important>
3. Type of laptop onto which you are installing
</most important>

There are a _lot_ of different Powerbooks out there!.

3.1 Speed (MHz), processor type (G3 or G4) and Model (e.g. if some
flavour of G3...WallStreet, Lombard, Pismo)
3.2 Size of HD, amount of RAM, CD-RW, CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

4. Are you trying to format the whole disk and install only Ubuntu or
are you adding Ubuntu to an existing setup? If so, what version of OS.

5. How do you boot Ubuntu?

Eric.
