Thank you.
I hoped that Nautilus has an integrated image viewer as slideshow.
Konqueror does it.
Hope it will be in a next version of Gnome...

Simple solution if you like Konqueror:
Install the KDE Libraries and Konqueror
It will run under gnome quite happily if the proper libs are installed
-- do it from synaptic and you should get all you need without arguments
