There are a few motherboards on the market right now that come with 4 
SATA hardware channels that support hardware fakeraid.  Currently 
getting the hardware fakeraid working in ubuntu takes a bit of work, but 
I wrote a howto on the wiki that should help.

That should be plenty sufficient, and inexpensive.
