As others have said, go with AMD. They are much cheaper, and in
number-crunching they perform better than Intel processors. I've tested
povray on P4 1.8 and AMD 1800+: P4 finished the render in 18 minutes,
AMD in 10. 

And don't go with 10k RPM hard disks. They are more expensive, and the
performance gain is miserable (tested with postgres 8.1, database was 2
gigs large (test involved joining three tables with 250k, 800k and 2500k
of rows in tables).

The money you saved invest in buying more RAM.
