I don't know, though, if it's still impossible to do it.  I get the
impression that HostAP might not need the wireless card to be in Master
mode, and if the OP didn't really mean "Access Point" but just an interface
for connection sharing, then that can certainly be done by putting the card
into AdHoc mode.
