Can't get java to work with firefox

Hi
I have sent 3 emails to the ubuntu-users list with no reply so I am
trying it again.
I have downloaded the jre-1_5_0_05-linux-i586.bin and I did what the
instructions said  to do and did what mozilla web page said to do by
cp the java plugins to firefox plugin folder, restarted firefox but
java still not working with firefox.  What do i need to do next.
