Did you come from Slackware or something? LOL

You've got Totem, Totem-xine, Kaffeine, Kaboodle,  Noatun, VLC, Mplayer,
Kmplayer, Xine-ui.......

Any one of those is in the Ubuntu archive.  No tarballs necessary. :-)
It's similarly true when it comes to straight audio players as well
(Rythmnbox, Muine, amaroK, BMP, XMMS, juk......

Just pick your favorite(s) and apt-get install....
