Couldn't understand where the problem is occurring. Do you mean to say
that it asks you for a username and password and when you put it in, it
goes to the command line instead of starting the Gnome display manager.
You might be doing something wrong in the sequence though i can't figure
out what.
Maybe just writing startx at the command line will work for you.
