There are two ways to use an iRiver player 7xx or 8xx with linux.
One way is to use the UMS firmware provided by iRiver. Then the player
can be used as mass storage device (like a "normal" usb stick). This
firmware limitates the recording capabilities of the iRiver. That's why
I would not recommend using the UMS firmware.
The second way is to use a special software to transfer music. You will
have to install the packages libifp4 and ifp-line-libifp4 via Synaptic
or ap-get. Try ifp --help to see the command line options for
communication with the 7xx/8xx.

Oh, I just read your post again. My instructions are for Breezy but I
used my iRiver 895 also with Hoary. I can't remember exactly how I
configured Hoary though.
