Broadly speaking, you don't have to worry about viruses on linux. 
However, there is a GPL anti-virus scanner called 'ClamAV', installable 
from Synaptic.

Not sure how well it works with Thunderbird; there is a plugin-in for 
Sylpheed-Claws email client.
