You might want to look at the wiki page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MidiSoftwareSynthesisHowTo - it's something I
helped write a few months ago. I've only tested it on hoary, and there are
probably plenty of improvements to be made to it, but you might find it
useful.
Also, with a Soundblaster Live, you should be able to get hardware MIDI
working (depending on the model). There's some information on the forums
at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=30963. Hope this helps,
