Thanks for that.  That made me look at the adduser man pages;  it isn't
just a one-trick pony.  Though I'm not sure that I'd have understood how
it could add users to groups, as the man pages are a bit cryptic (as
ever).

"Add an existing user to an existing group
       If  called  with two non-option arguments, adduser will add an
existing user to an existing group."

The old non-option arguments trick eh...
