I don't use gedit much, but this thread caused me to open a few files and experiment. I found I can drag and drop tabs outside the window, and a new instance appears containing the file in that original tab. The reverse also works - drag the tab from a separate window into the original window, and it appears there as a new tab.
Quite a cool feature...
