Still printer problems

Hi all, in desperation I have installed hlip, and as a last resort want 
to try setting it up
(HP Laserjet 1100) at "localhost:631"  Could someone advise me as to how 
I get past the
"username and password"  if that is possible?
My history with printers and Linux hasn't been good, if this fails I am  
re-installing Win98SE and Hoary,
as the printer did work with that till I did a fresh install to Breezy.
Have since re-installed Hoary with an official CD (first install was 
with a purchased CD) and had no success
getting printer to behave in a sensible manner.  So my next re-install 
will be done with the purchased CD.
Failing that in total frustraton will give up. Have nearly had enough. 
Am on Linuxprinting forum, and mailing list, and hlip and local host:631 
suggestion came from there.
Only other thing I can think of is that the parallel port may not be 
working correctly, is sending something to the printer though.
