firefox and animated gif

hi list,
is it just me, or is there a function that i triggered which disables
the animation of gif-files? 

i just noticed on a friends website that is bloated and loaded with gifs
that neither of them animates anymore. not that i care that much, cause
this simple site caused firefox to use 60-70% of my cputime only because
of the lame gifs :)

though i wonder what could cause such behaviour. anyone out there with
the same 'problem'?
