Cannot load up graphical desktop: ISSUE SOLVED. THANKS!

Dear Ulrich,
thanks for your shot in the dark. You were right. "sudo apt-get
install ubuntu-desktop" was the solution. I wonder why removing
evolution removed that package. And I wonder why installing
ubuntu-desktop installed gnome-games-data, when I don't even play
games on ubuntu.

Anyway, thank you very much!
jc

just two shots in the dark, but have you

       a) checked that ubuntu-desktop is installed?
       'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop'

       b) tried moving your old homedir and start with a new one?
       'sudo mv /home/jeff /home/jeffBACKUP'
       'sudo mkdir /home/jeff'
       'sudo chown -R jeff:jeff /home/jeff'
