pppoeconf failure after upgrade to Hoary

Hi,

I finished upgrading an old desktop to Hoary (yes, I know, it was about
time). Before that, it was running a plain old Warty, with nvidia drivers,
connecting to the Internet through an ethernet ADSL modem (Bewan 100,
namely). After the upgrade, everything works fine except the net. The ppp
magic does not work, and pppoeconf doesn't even see the modem.

I booted from Hoary Live CD, and from there I can pppoeconf without any
problem, hence this message. Do you have any idea about what has gone wrong
? I know I can still surf from the Live CD, but I'd rather fix this pppoe
thing.
