CPU usage at 100% when playing avi files?

Related to my original question about avi playback, I was wondering if
it's normal for CPU usage to be at 100% when playing avi files, and if
not, is there any way to fix this? At 100% usage, the image in playback
becomes choppy and often sticks or stops (while the audio continues to
play for a bit longer); alternatively, the audio will become silent
while the image plays in a choppy manner. Using totem-xine or gxine;
computer specs: 2.4 ghz Celeron processor, 256 MB RAM,
onboard/integrated video and audio. Using Hoary Hedgehog version of
Ubuntu.
Thanks...
Anthony
