5.04 /dev/fd/* broken

Hello all,

after installing 5.04, I am not able to access the floppy drive.

Errors read like "no such device /dev/fd0",
or "/dev/fd/0 is no block-orientated device".

I tried MAKEDEV -d generic, but to no avail,
and being at my wits´ end, I am hoping for help.
