You don't have to remove ubuntu-desktop. What you might want to do is
just 'sudo apt-get remove firefox firefox-gnome-support
mozilla-firefox mozilla-firefox-gnome support'. After this, make sure
you kill all firefox.bin and mozilla-firefox.bin. (If you don't know
how, just reboot the system.)
Now, you could install firefox by doing 'sudo apt-get install
mozilla-firefox mozilla-firefox-gnome support'. (Make sure that you
have disabled backport in your sources.list file.)
