And in the start-up write:
knoppix screen=800x600
If it runs no problem installing Ubuntu also.
Also now with the Live CD try:
If problem with the graphic woun't startup, then press Ctrl+Alt+F"
simuntaniously, and in the prompt write:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
enter
and you can configure your graphic card. Try the defaults for a start.
