Kernel 386 installed instead of 686

Hmm, I'm not a kernel expert by a long shot. Since all the other distro
packagers seem to have chosen to install a kernel compiled for 686, I
assumed this improved the performance significally.
Now, I'm not sure I get this bit about everybody having the same kernel.
(Actually, I'm sure I don't get it.) Do you mean that by installing the
686 I get less drivers?
