What is it that people have against brown?
Ubuntu is & always has been one of the smoothest & most
professional-looking Linux desktops there is. SuSE is a garish tart's
handbag, as are most KDE ones. Mandriva is a little more restrained
but still a penguinfest. Linspire is a vile mess of neon stripes and
cheap rubbish shiny looks. Xandros is at least not lairy; instead it's
drab and plain. Vector is an utter mess of styles designed by spotty
teenage nerds who've never touched an actual woman and have the visual
design sense of Stevie Wonder.
Even WinXP's teletubbies look is at least a polished, consistent one.
There used to be two good-looking, restrained, elegant, businesslike
Linux desktops out there: RedHat's BlueCurve and Ubuntu's earth-toned
GNOME. Now Fedora looks like an explosion in a bubblebath factory. I'm
just glad Ubuntu didn't turn into some retina-searing tangerine dream.
Yes, it's brown. Brown is a lovely warm natural colour. It's the skin
colour of a quarter of humanity. There's nothing wrong with brown.
It's a change from grey but it's restrained and elegant and
/different./ Since most Linux graphical design is from the school that
holds that public spaces look more attractive when liberally sprayed
with aerosol paint, be grateful for Ubuntu's African-themed nut- and
bark- hued loveliness.
And quit bitching about the brown!
