how to stop cron apt from using all my dialup bandwidth

What's the best way to disable /etc/cron.daily/apt so it doesn't take
all my dialup bandwidth when I need it most? I have a bunch of
sources in /etc/apt/sources.list, and cron apt just took all my
bandwidth for about 14 minutes to update them. I prefer to do my
updates manually when I'm not doing other web work. As I scan
cron.daily/apt, it's not obvious how I can regain contol. For now, I
just 'chmod -x /etc/cron.daily/apt', but this shouldn't be necessary.
I'm running a daily updated dapper-devel version.
TIA
