I have read the whole thread so far, and I believe you are fighting
windmills. Research the backup solutions that are available, e.g. (in no
particular order):
backuppc
keep
konserve
rdiff-backup
tar
afbackup
amanda-*
backup-manager
backup2l
backupninja
bacula
bkp
cdbackup
cpbk
Etc., you get the picture. Search for "backup" in Synaptic.
These systems cover many cases from enterprise to individual. However,
they might not be what you have in mind regarding ease of use. For this,
