Another Brainy option would be to try the new VMware Server(Free
Edition). So you could technically always run the same main OS and then
have testing images that you can load/unload at a whim of whatever OS
you like. Keep in mind you won't be able to compare performance though
since you'll be running them on shared resources.
Personally I run gnome with 1/2 KDE apps and I think it's one of the
neatest ways to get everything you want. Well minus some odd glitches
and KDE windows looking jumbo in gnome.
I've been meaning to switch KDE actually so things scale better but it
was taking too much time to rearrange the menu and taskbar the way I like.
