VMware tools is not required to get an X server up and running. :)
And another thing, VMware tools is a pain to install in Ubuntu because the
kernel is compiled with a different version of GCC to that shipped as default
in Ubuntu so you have to go through the rigmarole of pulling down the correct
version and then messing around to get the tools installer to run without
moaning :(
