For color printers I'd recommend Epson. They tend to be supported very
well and they are cheap, particularly the cartridges. Ubuntu uses cups,
so anything that works right with cups will work with Ubuntu.
Regarding modems whatever you do don't choose anything with a SmartLink,
they are terrible:
- The driver is proprietary/privative: it is not free software.
- The driver is slow: if you hear the communication there are lot's of
strange noices, you are lucky if you get 1KB/s.
- The driver is unstable: you might be disconnected after 5 minutes, an
hour, two hours, who knows... and reconnecting again may need rebooting.
- The driver is destructive: it caused my rock-stable computer to freeze
for times betwee 5 seconds and a minute about 50 times and to totally
freeze (hard reboot) twice.
The modem is identified like this:
  0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M)
AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01)
on lspci.
Hope it helps.
