686 kernel wastes CPU power

I'm running a 686 kernel.  It is custom built, but that shouldn't matter. 
Everything runs great.  I think if this was really a kernel issue the
Linux kernel programmers would have noticed this a long time ago.  I
suspect you had issues somewhere else.  Possibly these issues were simply
reporting problems and not actually more CPU time going to a process? 
Did you try using time to compare how much cpu time the same program eats
on both configurations?
