/dev/video gone after restart

Machine:  Ubuntu Dapper Drake

After an apt-get dist-upgrade I restarted my ubuntu server (used as a
mythtv machine). Now there is no entry for /dev/video* . I know that
Dapper uses udev ... but I don't understand how that works for setting
up devices. The device IS there and was working correctly before the
restart. Any ideas what went wrong / what to check out?
