There's a crucial space between "remove" and "--purge"  thus:

sudo apt-get remove --purge realplayer

Or was that a typo? Obviously, if you merge remove and --purge by leaving
the space out, apt won't recognise what you intended. 

Wrong magic incantation ;-)
