The fact that Xorg or anything uses lots of "virtual" memory is not a
problem, it's a feature (I have similar figures on my machine).
The "virtual" memory is not at all an indication of how much physical
RAM is actually being used. Memory management in Linux is very
complex...

However the fact that you lost the use of the Shift and Control keys is
definitely a bug !
You should file a bug report about it so hopefully it can be fixed in
time.
