Hmmm, I noticed the same problem last night, I have "only" 768MB of RAM,
which so far has always been plenty enough to not need to touch the swap
99.5% of the time, but this new "brltty" process, by using 200MB,
brought my machine down its knees, I had to kill it for the system to
recover its usual responsiveness.
I hope it won't be turned on by default in the final release !
The effects are bad enough on my machine with 768MB of RAM, but for
machines with 512MB or even 256MB (I think I saw brand new Dell machines
with only 256MB, so that's not un-realistic), must be literally the end
of the world.
Maybe in 5 years when we all have 4 core CPU's and 16GB of RAM, that
won't be a problem, but until then... ;-)
