The output of dpkg -l suggests the connection between the first three 
columns of the output and the Desired, Status, and Err lines by means of 
the vertical lines and slashes.  The dpkg man page should probably 
explain that.  I would file a wishlist bug, but don't have the time at 
the moment, feel free to if you want.
