Dapper Beta printer installation fails

This has been an ongoing problem from day one when I joined Ubuntu
with Breezy: HP DeskJet 5850 LAN printer, IP 192.168.1.63 with HP
JetDirect protocol (port 9100), using hpijs driver from HPLIP.
This printer would not install via the System -> Administration ->
Printing menu. In Breezy, at least, I could simply edit
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf to manually install this printer via
http://localhost:631.
Printer did install correctly in Dapper Flight 6 (again using
System -> Administration -> Printing), but the exact same
procedure now fails in Dapper Beta -- in fact the Printer window
freezes with an "...application quit unexpectedly..." message.
Unfortunately, installation via http://localhost:631 has in Dapper
been effectively closed off (so much for Linux choice).
Naturally, I've filed bugs and comments galore in Malone, but it
is nigh impossible to get the attention of the devs. I notice that
between Flight 6 and Beta the New Printer icon has been
beautified while support for my printer has disappeared.
Seems like a case of wrong priorities to me.
I fear that I may have to return to Debian before long...
Signed: Disappointed.
