Just as side note.

1. Consider installing "dlocate" (``Debian locate'' ;-))

   It is waaay faster than dpkg for looking up package status or
   information on the command line. Ok, not that much for dpkg -l, but
   very much for dpkg -S or -L.

2. About the what does "pn" or "xx" means discussion. If there is a pair
   of letters and you don't know what they mean, just use:

dlocate -s gaim
(or "dpkg -s gaim" if you have the time to spare :-))

(none requires root)

If the package is NOT installed it will make that very clear:

~ % dlocate -s juk
Package "juk" not installed.

Better he? :-) If the package IS installed it will print (too much) info
and at the second line, "Status:", you get a much more verbose version
of "ii" or "i?".
