Library dependencies and gcc versions don't matter? You can get into
nasty dependency issues. They would be possible to resolve with careful
use of apt-get -f install and dpkg --force-*, but not recommended
without knowledge of the dpkg/apt

When I sidegraded from woody to warty or hoary (can't remember), I had
all kinds of annoying little bugs nobody could reproduce, often coming
from the left over config file here and there. It was so bad I stopped
reporting anything until I could do a fresh install.
