Dapper upgrade fails

Hi all,

I have just run "update-manager -d" on my laptop running Breezy , but
when I reboot, gdm fails to start; I get left staring at a black
screen after the startup sequence has completed.

How can I determine and fix what went wrong? I would be  happy to file
a bug report at launchpad, but I not sure what information would be
useful.

I have booted knoppix  and mounted the laptop's HD, so I can access
the log and config files.
