'device not ready' during successful DVD burn...?

The kernel logs showed six of these errors per second during an otherwise 
successful DVD burn using an exteranl Pioneer DVD100-D using a TDK IDE --> 
USB converter:

04/22/2006 10:27:29 AM	flight6	kernel	[4340212.195000] sr 0:0:0:0: Device not 
ready.

This continued until 10:28:00 + 2 errors.  Any ideas what is happening??
