help with floppy drive

You can read floppies that have DOS (FAT12) filesystem on them.
Normally, the /media/floppy mount point is set up to auto-sense the
filesystem in use on the floppy so it should work fine.
You did not mention what type of work was saved onto the floppies. If
the data saved requires a program that only exists in Windows and can
not be run using Wine, then it matters little that you can read the
floppies using Ubuntu. If it is word documents or excel spreadsheets,
then OpenOffice should be more than enough.
