Using a UPS

I had a UPS back when I was on Windows and when I installed Ubuntu a 
year or so ago I didnt even think about putting the software on my 
computer. But the power finally went off recently and the UPS didnt 
work. I installed the software on my laptop and then turned off the 
power to the UPS and it worked fine. I installed the software via WINE 
but there is a problem with it connecting to the UPS via the USB 
connection.

I did a little searching but only found code that I had to write and 
didnt understand.

Is there any software to help with this that someone knows about?
