When I used Arch Linux, I was able to use

Code:
--------------------
    xmodmap -e "keysym Multi_key = Alt_R"
--------------------
to set up composing with the right Alt. However, that does not work in
GNOME/Ubuntu (I'm not sure which it is). I can set the compose key in
the Keyboard Preferences, so I don't care much, but for posterity, how
did you use xmodmap?
